1852 - First stamp album produced in England
1864 - Word "philately" coined by Georges Herpin in France (Greek philos = loving, ateleia = free of payment)

Serious collectors: Queen of England has world's largest & oldest collection. DYTM Raja Muda Selangor also has renowned collection.

Originally study of labels representing postal payment. Now widened to systematic collection of stamps, postcards, covers, postmarks & postal material.
